Seevolution is implemented in Java, and tested with Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. Seevolution requires Sun Java version 1.5 or later. Many computers already have Java 1.5 or later installed. We recommend using Seevolution via Java Web Start, although a JAR distribution is available for power users (see below).

Step 1. Check your Java

Mac OS X

Seevolution requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), or later. It will not run on OS X 10.3. Users of OS X 10.4 must install Java 1.5 either from Apple's web site or from Apple Software Update prior to using Seevolution.

Windows

Many Windows machines already have Java installed. For those that don't, Java may be downloaded from Sun Microsystems. Seevolution has only been tested with 32-bit Java. If using Internet Explorer: Microsoft has introduced a bug that prevents direct launch of Java applications like Seevolution. Please right-click the download link and select "Save Target As..." Once the file has downloaded, simply click "Open". Alternatively, you may use a different web browser such as Firefox, Opera, Safari, or Chrome.

Linux

Seevolution requires Sun's java to run on Linux machines, and is not likely to work with other Java implementations. Sun's java can usually obtained from your distribution provider. For recent versions of Ubuntu, for example, simply run sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin. Alternatively, Sun's Java for Linux may be downloaded directly from Sun Microsystems. Linux users should consult their distribution provider's instructions for configuring Sun Java to work with Java Web Start. A typical command-line to launch Seevolution might look like:
javaws http://seevolution.org/cgi-bin/seevolution.jnlp

Step 2. Launch Seevolution

Click here to launch Seevolution via Java Web Start. Java will download the Seevolution software and warn you that it has been signed by either Aaron Darling or Andres Esteban-Marcos. You must click the "Trust" or "Accept" button in order to run Seevolution.

Power users only: use the Seevolution JAR directly

For those who do not wish to use Seevolution via Java Web Start, it is also possible to download the Seevolution JAR file and run it directly. First, you must ensure that Java version 1.5 or later is installed (see above) and you must also install Java 3D version 1.5 or later. Next, obtain the latest Seevolution JAR. Finally, you must ensure that Java3D is in the Java classpath. Either copy the Java3D files directly to the JVM directory or set the classpath environment or command-line variable when running Seevolution.
